Ursula's father, Alfred Kroeber, was an anthropologist, and her mother, Theodora, a writer of children's stories. After studying at Radcliffe university and Columbia university, she went to study in France, where she met Charles Le Guin, whom she later married. She has three children and two grandchildren.
