Description: Laura's father has been acting very different lately. He left his job as a veternarian at an animal hospital and no one quite knows what he's doing now, locked away in his shed. He refuses to tell Laura about the work he's doing because he can't tell anyone until he's finished. If Laura goes snooping around his shed again, her father will send her away to live with her mother. Laura doesn't want to leave all of her animals (and she has a lot of them) or her home, with all it's land and woods. The threat of having to leave her home should be enough to keep her from prying, but she just can't stand not knowing what her dad is up to. She also can't understand why all the animals in the woods are behaving so oddly. A bunch of bats swooped down and tried to attack her and her friend Joe!
Determined to find out why her father is acting so strangely, Laura begins by visiting the animal hospital. Unfortunately Laura doesn't get the answers she needs from Dr. Carpenter, the veternarian that worked with her father. When Laura returns home and goes on one of her walks in the forest, she discovers two men with rifles and with what sounds like a wild animal, trapped in their truck. Whatever they are doing, Laura knows it isn't legal. Does it involve her father? Her father had told her not to go into the woods, but never said why. Did he know what was going on in the woods, and what all the strange animal cries from the woods were about? Can Laura find out what the strange creature is in the woods?
