He graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in History (with Honors) and Latin in 1967; he then started Duke Law School but was drafted after a year and a half. He spent two years in the Army, including most of 1970 as an enlisted interrogator with the 11th Armored Cavalry in Vietnam and Cambodia. He got back with no physical problems of any sort, but not in the best frame of mind. David finished law school and was hired as Assistant Town Attorney for the Town of Chapel Hill, NC.
David's first story sold when he was an undergraduate, but he didn't start writing seriously until he got back from 'Nam. Some of his fiction has used 'Nam directly; more of it, including the Hammer's Slammers series, has transmuted that war into a more SF context.
His first two books appeared in 1979. In 1980, he quit lawyering and got a part-time job driving a city bus so that he could spend more time writing. By 1981, he was able to write full time. Both his law license and his chaffeur's license are still valid.
