About Author
George attended Yale University, where an organic chemistry course disabused him of the notion of becoming a doctor. He had the opportunity to meet many of his SF idols thanks to his first wife, who was Damon Knight and Kate Wilhelm's babysitter. With their encouragement, he began writing science fiction in 1970. To date he has published about twenty novels and six collections of short fiction. Beyond his science fiction, Effinger has written two crime novels, Felicia and Shadow Money.

His most recently published novel is The Exile Kiss, the third book in the Budayeen series that began with the award winning When Gravity Fails.

Following the example of his first mentors, Damon Knight and Kate Wilhelm, Effinger helped other New Orleans writers through sf/fantasy writing courses at UNO’s Metropolitan College from the late 1980s to 1996, and a monthly writing workshop he founded in 1988, which continues to meet regularly.

After a lifetime filled with chronic pain and chronic illness, he died peacefully in his sleep in New Orleans on April 27, 2002.
