When Larn Surfin and his friend Tark went to investigate, they found that the fire breathing dragon was a contraption that sailed through the air with strange beings inside of it. Beings that had also harnessed the dragon's fire in little sticks they carried at their sides.

Barely escaping capture by these beings, Larn accidentally discovers an ancient cavern illuminated by a huge crystal. There he finds the wounded wizard Mordrid who convinces Larn that the crystal has summoned him to be the next wizard of the land. For two years Larn remains in the cavern learning the ways of the crystal until, armed with a staff instead of a sword, he sets out with his newfound power to do battle with the dragon...
