The Divide by Elizabeth KayDescription: Felix is a special sort of hero. Though brave and resourceful, he has a heart condition that threatens his life. This summer, Felix is spending his vacation in Costa Rica. At a spot called the Divide — where the waters that run down to the Pacific and Atlantic oceans separate — Felix tumbles into a magical backwards world where mythical creatures are real and human beings are only a legend. It is there that Felix will encounter fantastical new friends who may help him find a cure for his illness. It's sure to be a journey beyond Felix's wildest dreams!
Excerpt:
'Well, peck me where it hurts!' said the voice. 'What in the world are you?'
Felix stared. I'm dreaming, he thought. That's it, I'm dreaming.
'You're not a tangle-child,' said the creature. 'Your ears are the wrong shape.'
The beast was enormous. It towered over him, like a misshapen grizzly bear. He couldn't see what color it was as the moonlight turned everything to black and white, but he could work out that it had the head of an eagle, only five times the size, and feathery ears, like an owl. Its front legs were those of a raptor, and it had wings. But its back legs were those of a lion, and it had a lion's tail. Felix suddenly remembered the footprints he had seen. There hadn't been any jaguars or cassowaries after all. There hadn't been two creatures at all — just the one. This one.
