The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump by Harry Turtledove

Description: A light tale of an alternate universe, where magic is used as often as technology is in our own. The protagonist is an inspector for the Environmental Perfection Agency, who must discover if a toxic spell byproduct dump is leaking - and what horrific spill-offs are escaping. Not as cerebral as much of Turtledove's work, but no less enjoyable for it, this book could easily be broadened into a fun series. Well worth reading on its own merits, and not just for fans of Turtledove and/or alternate worlds.
