Description: In an alternate world, twenty-five million years ago, the Named are a clan of intelligent wild cats, who live as herders, breeding and protecting forest animals. Ratha, a female who has discovered how to tame the dreaded power of fire and use it for the benefit of the clan, is their leader. Against the advice of Thakur, the wise and loyal herding teacher of the yearling cubs, Ratha admits to the clan a stranger called Orange-Eyes, fearless, strong and intelligent. Orange-Eyes recognizes, as Ratha never has, that the one who controls fire can become absolute ruler, not only of the clan, but the surrounding territory never theirs before.
Subtly and slowly at first, but soon in open defiance, the newcomer challenges Ratha's authority. Through Fessran, cheif Firekeeper, he creates and fosters ill feeling and distrust between Firekeepers and the Herders. The final confrontation of the ruthless, power-mad Orange-Eyes and Ratha, who-almost too late-fights to regain control of fire for the good of the entire clan, makes a dramatic and moving climax.
