Description: 'The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz' is about a young boy who grows up in the Jewish ghetto of Montreal, Canada, in the 1940's. He becomes obsessed by the idea of aquiring land ever since his grandfather said, "A man without land is nothing". The few scruples he had possessed in his early childhood disappear as Duddy embarks on a journey to success that is made possible through the manipulation of the people closest to him. Duddy's antics are quite humorous, and there are those who would be disgusted and offended by his often vulgar behaviour, but it adds to the flavour of the novel and aids the development of his character. It's a wonderful read, an enthralling pessimistic view of human nature, and I highly reccommend it to anyone who is interested in good Canadian literature.
