The Earthborn by Paul CollinsDescription: The Earthborn, the U.S. debut of prolific Australian author Paul Collins, is a futuristic story about life on Earth after humans have destroyed their own civilization with nuclear war. Generations afterwards, savage gangs of inbred humans rule the streets and ruined buildings of Melbourne, killing each other for scraps of food.
Meanwhile, the starship Colony is headed back home to Earth after finding Tau Ceti III uninhabitable. The people of Colony, called Starborn, are genetically enhanced elitists, and their leaders' goals once they reach Earth are simple: Exterminate all surviving savages, terraform the planet, and repopulate it with Starborn.
The starship, however, wasn't meant to return to Earth, and the long journey has taken its toll on the craft. As Colony enters the atmosphere, it's forced to crash-land in Melbourne. Young Welkin Roberts is one of the first Starborn to step foot on Earth as part of a reconnaissance team assigned to explore the ship's perimeter. The team is ambushed by a pack of feral Earthborn known as Jabbers, but Welkin is rescued by Sarah, the leader of an Earthborn group trying to unite other displaced orphans in a war against the Jabbers. Once Welkin meets the other young members in Sarah's group and spends some time with them, he realizes that the Starborn mission to exterminate these people must be stopped.
