Future Wars by Martin H. Greenberg & Larry Segriff

Description: These are the men and women, the aliens and the machines, that fight the wars of tomorrow. These are the stories of honor, betrayal-and the price people will pay to survive...and triumph. These are Future Wars.

Future Wars is a timely anthology from DAW that includes ten stories about how military conflict will be carried out - or avoided - in the future. The impressive list of contributors includes Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Barry Longyear, Bill Fawcett, and Robert J. Sawyer.

Noteworthy stories include "Los Niños" by William H. Keith Jr. and Rusch's "Sparks in Cold War." A squadron of Marines has the seemingly impossible mission of breaching an enemy stronghold in "Los Niños." The enemies are called Greenie-Meanies, toadlike hermaphrodites that feed their own excretions to their children and eat their dead. Because the Greenie-Meanies are so alien, the human Marines have no qualms about killing them - that is, until Gunnery Sergeant Aquilar finds out that they're actually attacking a military academy and killing hundreds of alien children. Rusch's story shows just how easy it is for humans to interfere with the peace process between two alien races.
