Description: Born in the first seconds of the year that began a new global era, Jackal has been raised as Hope of Ko and trained for leadership. She is tormented, though, by the truth her mother let slip in anger - "you're no more a Hope than I am." Still, when assigned to an EarthGov project, she intends to do her best for Ko. Everything falls apart for her when, forced to plead guilty of a heinous crime to save parents and lover from seeing she is truly a false Hope, she is sentenced to virtual confinement - 80 years' worth, though the authorities offer a reduction to eight. What happens to the extraordinary young woman during those years is quite a breakthrough. The people of our time are recognizable in the people of Jackal's, and though their technology is fiction to us, inner human strength triumphs over hardship, and good comes out of even the depths of madness. Jackal's story resounds with more faith in character than is usual in future-noir.
