Description: When a plague of unknown origin sweeping across the land of Omoham from the south forces people to flee northward into the city of Cinátis, Jeru's parents sell their farm and head for their ancestral city of Lauxis in the extreme northwest province of Omoham. Jeru, the youngest of three sons, decides that, rather than travel with his parents, he will leave home as his two older brothers have done and head south, directly into the face of the oncoming plague to find out more about it. Gifted with the power of stone felding and a staff made of mantle-wood, which his beloved brother Samu has divined for him with the power of wood felding, Jeru sets out on his quest. Along the way he meets a young man named Eríl from the enigmatic race of beings called Na-tés, long thought to be extinct-or gone from the known world. Together they encounter the sitting witch of the City of Cinátis, who encourages them to seek out the cause of the plague. In reality, however, the witch Ka-té has sought out Jeru for a greater destiny-to lead the war against the ruthless Chturc who have invaded Omoham. Before sending Jeru on his way, Ka-té gives Jeru a bottle of elixir, which he is to drink when he is serene, but he warns Jeru that while it will increase his earth powers, if there is a flaw within him, it will also increase that, and the effects will last forever.
