The Bloody Road to Kabul by Noel Sheehan

Description: In 1979, John McKnight and his pal Tony Townsend, both ex-SAS soldiers, enlisted as mercenaries to train and fight alongside the Afghan rebels against the Russians who had just invaded Afghanistan. With modern weaponry, the Mujahedin and their mercenary allies, along with deserters from the Soviet army, wreaked havoc on the enemy, ambushing their convoys and attacking their air bases. The Soviets hunted down the Mujahedin defenders like wild animals, levelling their villages and showing no mercy. In the midst of this terrible war, John McKnight found time to fall in love with Jania, one of the Ayatollah Khomeini’s Revolutionary Guards. John McKnight survived the brutal war, but only just, as an exploding grenade left him badly injured. From his hospital bed, with tears in his eyes, he watched his companions and his beloved Jania depart for the Panjshir Valley to renew their fight against the Russian invaders and their Afghan allies.
