Watchmen by Alan Moore

Description: The most breath-taking, carefully designed, amazingly detailed, intelligently planned american comic-book ever (though created by two englishmen ;)), Watchmen is simply THE comic.

The reasons?

The story is intriguing. The characters are powerful, detailed and complex. The setting is carefully designed. Each page, each panel, is planned to achieve the maximum effect on the reader. The number of clever and innovative ideas it introduces in each chapter is simply astounding. And the clever and continuous use of each and every one of the comics' 'tips and tricks' possibilities classifies Alan Moore as the best comics writer of the western world. His knowledge of the comics as a medium rivals Will Eisner's, and these are major words. And reading the fifth chapter in the series, 'Fearful Simmetry', back and fro, rejoycing on the small details added to enhance the simmetric effect of the comic, is an experience every comics fan should have.

In short, a must. If you haven't read Watchmen, you cannot consider yourself a comics-book fan.

(And don't forget to re-read it afterwards while browsing The Annotated Watchmen at ; you'll thank me later)

Incidentally, I am the second voter: I accidentally entered 5 out of 10 for my rating. I meant, like the first voter, to enter 10: Watchmen is the best comic series I have read. Disregard the 8 below if it's still there and substitute 10.
