Sword at Sunset by Rosemary SutcliffDescription: A dark age novel of Arthur. It manages to remain lergely true to the accepted tale while bringing in a realism and knowledge of the dark ages. Mostly a childrens author Sutcliffe brings a truly adult slant to the classic story. Gone is Lancelot, in his place steps forward Bedivere (Bedwyr). As in most versions Arthur's (Artos) adolescence takes up the first part as he emerges from the shadow of his uncle the high king some decades after the Romans have left. Later the tale is enriched with Bedwyr and Gwenhumara but the tragic love story is told with a rawness and realism that the old tales lack. I've seen many comments in the line of ...at last a new version of Arthur. But I've read a few and this is THE version you should read.
