That science fantasy has been overtaken by science fact in the era of Appollo and Soyuz spacecrafts does not a whit from this story. Originally published in 1936, many years before Day of the Triffids achieved universal acclaim, it affords the modern reader a chance to see a brilliant imagination at work, one that truly merits comparison with Verne and Wells
