Description: A compelling story, well-paced, with memorable characters and occasional flashes of poetic prose. Minor inconsistencies in the plot should not trouble the reader, as Cherryh is far more interested in psychological affect than in the plot details that obsess mystery writers; the focus of the work is the emotional relationship between two characters, one human and one alien. This work easily sustains multiple re-readings.
