the north side of the tree by Maggie Prince

Description: North Side of the Tree is a vacuous tale of love and war amidst the tensions that exist between the Scots and the English. Beatrice, Robert’s rescuer in Raider’s Tale, finds herself struggling to deal with ever-complicated family issues whilst now also having to balance affairs of her own tumultuous heart. She seems too young to deal with most of the stuff that she has to contend with and it is her character’s implausibility that is a major downfall in the book. Far too much of North Side of the Tree is given over to her stuttering love for Robert and her (better chance of) love for John, the village pastor.
As the book opens, the whereabouts and well-being of Robert are unknown and Beatrice makes a stab at living a normal life; yet she remains hindered by her family’s antics: her father is overbearing, forcing her and her sister to marry men they do not wish to, her sister meanwhile is with child and Beatrice has to try to keep her secret life as traitor hidden for fear of being burnt at the stake. She runs away from home and ends up falling in love with John, her childhood teacher (despite the fact that she is still haunted by the ghost of the boy, Robert, she rescued).
