The Great Tree of Avalon: Shadows on the Stars by T.A. Barron

Description: The sequel to Child of the Dark Prophecy (2004) continues the saga in a fine and multilayered fashion. The plot takes readers deep underground to a dark cavern where the evil Rhita Gawr, who was banished by Merlin, has managed to return to the realm and plots to conquer Avalon, the bridge between mortal and immortal worlds. Meanwhile, above ground, the small but determined band of young people striving desperately to defeat the villain separate: Tamwyn, who is coming into his powers and possesses Merlin's staff, to make his way up the Great Tree and relight the stars; his foster brother, Scree, to be healed and then to lead the eaglefolk; and apprentice priestess Elli to do the bidding of the Lady of the Lake. Once again, Barron infuses the story with humor as he shares both the wonders of his lovingly created world and his appreciation of nature. Some obvious foreshadowing and coincidences notwithstanding, this dynamic fantasy adventure will leave readers wanting more. Sally Estes
