The fourteen kingdoms of Kallamar are under the rule of a royal regent who usurped its throne twenty years earlier and are on the brink of a civil war when a newly robed
battlemage named Damien Daverge is told by the rebellious Highlords that 'he'
is the true heir to the throne and crown. After an assassination attempt on his life Damien is also told that the only way for him to save the fourteen kingdoms is for him to prove to all that he is indeed the heir. But in order to do so he must travel to a place called Illsador or the godshall where the gods live and recover the dragon rings. In order to obtain the deadly rings that will kill him if he is not the heir, he must get permission to enter from the largest guardian dragon in the realm that protects the hall. He travels to Illsador with a motley assortment of people including the only known female cleric of justice who is accused of murder and the assassin who tried to kill him earlier in the book and who is still trying to do so. All of this he must do in just a few short weeks before his own cousin comes of age and takes the throne for himself and before the civil unrest that has been orchestrated by the Elvynn flares up into a complete war that will enable their return to power over all the other races that once disobeyed them as the masters of the world that much easier.
