Steven Barnes is a writer of fiction and screenplays with a list of martial-arts credits. He majored in Communication Arts at Pepperdine University and is a certified hypnotherapist from the Transformational Arts Institute in San Anselmo, Calif. His screenplay credits include an adaptation of H. Beam Piper's Little Fuzzy (1979), "The Test," an adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's short story for Disney Cable (1982), and scripts for The Real Ghostbusters ("Moaning Stones"), The Wizard ("H.E.N.R.I. VIII"), and two for The Twilight Zone ("Teacher's Aide" and the Silverberg short "To See the Invisible Man"). He served as creative consultant on the Sakura Ninja series of action-adventure films and on UA's full-length animated feature The Secret of Nimh; he also wrote his own, The Soulstar Commission, for Tercel Productions in 1987.
Steven has also been published in Beyond, Los Angeles Magazine, Black Belt (where he was kung-fu columnist for three years), Robert Adams' Horseclans anthologies, Analog, IASFM and The Magic May Return. He has been an instructor at UCLA's Creative Writing program since 1989, host of the acclaimed radio show Hour 25 (KPFK), and he's lectured on writing and the structure of creativity for MENSA. A "human performance technician," Steven holds a Black Belt in Kenpo Karate (AIKKA style), an instructor's certificate in Wu Ming Ta, and is ranked as an instructor candidate in Filipino Kali stick and knife fighting.
