Winner of three Hugo Awards: 1952 for Best New Talent (based on the publication of the novella "The Lovers"), 1968 for the novella "Riders of the Purple Wage" and 1972 for the first Riverworld novel "To Your Scattered Bodies Go". Winner of the Grand Master Award in 2001 and in the same year also the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. Author of more than 70 books and more than 100 stories.

Died 25th February 2009, aged 91.
