About Author
The 'official' biography says Lian Hearn, born in England, has studied Japanese and has a lifelong interest in Japan. However, Hearn is, in fact, the pseudonym for Australian-based childrens book author Gillian Rubinstein who wanted to write her first 'adult' novel without being labelled. The 'Lian' is the final syllable of her first name, and the 'Hearn' is from Lafcadio Hearn, a writer who lived in Japan at the end of the 19th century.

Riverhead will publish Hearn's next book, Heaven's Net Is Wide: The First Tale of the Otori, the prequel to the Otori series, in 2007.
