John Varley is the author of the Gaean Trilogy (Titan, Wizard, and Demon), Steel Beach, and The Golden Globe. He has won both the Nebula and Hugo Awards for his work.
Most of his short stories, and many of his novels, take place in the "Eight Worlds" framework. In it human beings have been kicked off the Earth by super-intelligent super-powerful aliens, in order that the whales and dolphins can have the planet to themselves.
