--Gillian Cross worked in a school and a bakery before studying at Oxford and Sussex universities. She has also been a childminder and an assistant to an MP. She has written around thirty books for children, many of them published by Puffin. In 1991 she was awarded the Carnegie Medal for "Wolf" and has won both the Smarties Prize and the Whitbread Award for "The Great Elephant Chase".
