Gail Carson Levine grew up in New York City and has been writing all her life. In high school, her poems were published in two anthologies of teenage poetry. She and her husband, David, collaborated a children's musical that was produced by a theater in Brooklyn. Today, she, David, and their Airedale, Jake, live in a two-hundered-year-old farmhouse in Brewster, New York. She was born in New York, New York on September 17, 1947. Her mother's name is Sylvia Carson and her father's name is David Carson. She also has a sister older than her who is an artist and a professor, her name is Rani. Gail graduated from City College of the City University of New York in 1969. As a child, Gail wanted to be an actress, writer, or artist. The acting idea was quickly dropped. Gail took a class on illustrating and writing and found that she liked writing more. She started writing her first book when she was in one of her writing classes. Gail also writes stories while on the train

Gail is also an administrator in helping people on welfare find jobs.
