About Author
Called the bitterest man who ever lived, Ambrose Bierce made his start as a journalist covering the American Civil War. He later became famous not only for his extreme cynicism and journalistic talent but for his weird fiction. Considered nearly Poe's equal by many in his day, he is perhaps best known for his book The Devil's Dictionary, also known alternately as The Cynic's Dictionary and The Cynic's Wordbook. In the early 20th century he decided he was 'sick of all this' life and living and wandered into Mexico during it's civil war. He was never heard from again and it is assumed that he was put before a firing squad in short order. Among others, his work inspired H.P. Lovecraft and Robert W. Chambers, and his piece "An inhabitant of Carcosa' is generally included in anthologies of formational Lovecraftian prose.
